I never thought I’d be writing a list of alternatives to Cram…but it’s happening, lol. If you are a student out there looking for an alternative solution to the now discontinued Cram for Mac or Cram for iPhone I have provided some suitable suggestions below. Quite frankly, only one of them have Cram’s multiple-choice testing feature, so if you are looking for that I don’t have many great solutions for that at the time (although I’m sure someone will have a great suggestion in the comments that I can later add to this post).

As for flashcard study apps, there are plenty out there and here are some of the best.

Mac:

Mental Case (Mac, iPhone & iPad) – Mental Case is probably the closest in quality to Cram. Although it doesn’t have the multiple choice testing mode they have a unique study case option that could work for some of you Crammers out there. Mental Case isn’t the most efficient app to work with, but what Mental Case offers that Cram didn’t have is a iPad app, so now those looking to study on the iPad can do so.

Study – This study app looks good and is easier to use than Mental Case. Even though it’s easier to use, it doesn’t have iPhone and iPad counterparts. If you just study on your Mac or only looking for a Mac study app this could be the one.

StarQuiz – This app is really geared toward teachers not really self learners, but this doesn’t mean you can’t be your own teacher . StarQuiz allows you to create a quiz and share with your students which means it uploads your self made test to the Internet…sigh. It’s really the only option for those preparing for a multiple-choice test. StarQuiz is another app that doesn’t have a mobile counterpart, but again everyone doesn’t own both a Mac and mobile Apple device.

iFlash – iFlash is an old standby. Really solid, really simple…maybe even a bit too simple. This app is nice, but it’s up to the user and what they need out of their study app if they will appreciate the true simplicity of the app or not.

iOS (iPhone and/or iPad)

FlashCards Deluxe – Has multiple choice option!!!! Also has Quizlet, Flashcardexchange, slideshows, custom text, and a lot more features. This is probably a true solution for those coming from Cram iPhone.

FlashCards – Multiple import options, text, audio, images, and more make this app a complete flash card solution for those seeking a flash card solution only.

Flashcards++ – Private and public sets with Quizlet, Dropbox imports, text to speech, smart study, and the typical flash card app features.

iFlipr Flashcards - No longer being updated like Cram, but is a solid alternative. Was brought back from not being sold because of popular demand. Spreadsheet import, offline study like Cram, smart learning algorithm.

A lot of you have emailed with the most amazing ideas for feature updates and we’ve considered them all, unfortunately we have decided to discontinue the development on Cram at this time.

SimpleLeap Software will continue to have new apps developed in the future, but Cram will no longer be sold and updated.

We really wanted to do some special things with Cram and were going to have Cram help students convert their class notes into flash cards and multiple choice tests. Sadly, our time, funding, and interest were limited in making Cram what it should be.

Cram will no longer be sold on both the iPhone and the Mac, but of course supported. We will continue support, including access to the Cram test portal for the next three (3) months.

All tests that you want to access must be moved to your device for future access.

Cram was our first app and was developed on the Blackberry initially in 2008. We have a special place in our hearts for the app and especially the users of the app. We will be pushing ourselves to make bigger and better apps in the future and we hope you guys stay along for the ride.

So…Goop as I may have mentioned, the first game from our new company Fine & Dandy Games! We’ve been working on our first game title for months and it’s FINALLY around the corner.

Hot on the heels of the release of the iPhone came an entire cottage industry that sprang up around Apple’s new device. Literally hundreds of cases in practically every conceivable color and style from dozens of manufacturers came on the scene to cater to the needs and desires of iPhone fanatics everywhere.

DinnerSpinner provides detailed instructions for creating meals from the pantry and on your time schedule. The app lets you choose how much time you want to spend on your meal and also what ingredients you want to put into the creation. You can also save your favorite recipes so that you have them with you at all times. Cooking meals at home can be a great way to save money and keep the finances in the black.

Chegg helps college students find amazing deals on textbook rentals. Paying college tuition is an expected expense, but facing that first bill for books can be downright shocking. This app allows college students to find the books they need by scanning in the bar code on the book or just searching by title, author or ISBN. The cost of books never goes down. Buying used books can be a cost saving alternative, but being able to rent books saves you the hassle of trying to re-sell them when the class is up (although there Chegg helps make that a little less painful). Renting will also be even more cost effective in the end.

UrbanSpoon gives culinary challenged students another way to save money on meals. The dials allow you to select a location to eat based on a number of different factors, including the average price of meals. Food can be one of the top expenses for college students. Finding different ways to save on that major expense can give college students an edge for leaving school debt free.

Pennies is another great budgeting app that makes tracking expenses as easy as touching the screen. You can also see what your top expenses are and get an estimate on what you are spending each day. The categories are set, so you will have to find a way to make them work. All in all, any tool that makes it easier to know your finances will give you a better chance of walking away from college debt free.

Getting a college education will be an expensive endeavor. The challenges that you face in school will be worth the effort. It will be made even more enjoyable if you can walk away with a degree and nothing to owe for it.

The best way to stay in the black financially is to always bring in more than you spend. Finding that financial balance in collage may require that you take on a job or find extra funding through scholarships. No matter how the bills get paid, you will be more likely to leave college debt free if you watch the spending and look for easy ways to cut your expenses.

It feels like cell phones have been around forever, but the truth is they only began to become truly widespread around a decade ago. Here are five of the top iPhone apps for student drivers:

Carticipate – Carticipate is a free application that you can download from the iTunes store. It’s a rideshare program designed to promote carpooling. It’s a great app for people who are interested in reducing their carbon footprint and/or saving money. People using this app can search for other people interested in carpooling in their area. This app isn’t restricted to users in the United States – it can also be used in other countries around the world. This is perfect for students commuting to and from school.

iGasUp – iGasUp is a program available for iPhone users for $2.99. This app will allow you to search for nearby gas stations and compare gas prices, allowing you to find the cheapest gas no matter where you are. There are over 110,000 gas stations on the iGasUp network. iGasUp constantly updates itself to provide you with the latest prices and provides maps to help you get to the gas station of your choice.

Trapster – Trapster is a brilliant app that is designed to help you avoid speed traps, police hang outs, speed cameras and stop lights equipped with cameras. Trapster can pull up a map of the area you’re driving in and show you where are the known speed traps are. While you’re driving, you can set Trapster up to issue a voice warning when you’re getting close to a speed trap or camera equipped stop light. Instead of buying yourself an illegal radar detection device, download Trapster instead.

TripAlyzer – This is an interesting app available for $5.99 for people who want to analyze their driving habits, become more efficient in driving and see what their carbon footprint looks like. TripAlyzer uses the same technology as GPS system and is able to track your driving habits and offer suggestions on how to more efficiently utilize your fuel. The app can tell you how much money it cost for each trip you take in your car.

Dynolicious – Silly name, but really awesome app for drivers interested in testing their driving skills and finding out exactly what their vehicle is capable of. This app isn’t cheap at $12.99, but if you want a full range of performance data this app is perfect. It can track things like elapsed times and trap speeds, lateral g-forces, breaking g-forces and horsepower.

Flying Hamster

There is nothing more suitable for a study break than a flying hamster and a cow with milk shooting udders. Yeah that’s right! You get a cute flying hamster armed with various weapons, that has only one goal and it’s to save your girl! Nothing can top that.

Boredom Breaker

Even though we know you love studying and you find it absolutely exhilarating and not even close to boring, we thought we would through this app in a just a bonus! Boredom Breaker keeps your mind off the books for a second and gives you over a thousand ideas on how to entertain yourself. The app suggests everything from flying a kite to base jumping so even if you may not have the time to quickly go base jump, there is something else that will certainly keep you entertained.

PhotoSpeak

Take a study break and create a 3D Avatar of yourself. Photo Speak takes a photo you already have of yourself and lets you add voice to your avatar, make a movie, and add glasses and other goofy things. The best part is that you can send out your creation to friends on FaceBook or YouTube – which would clearly indicate you are on a study break.

They Need To Be Fed

This game will keep your mind off of studying and on feeding little monsters – who said taking a study break wouldn’t involve a little work? This game is simple, just work your way through 7 worlds and 50 levels and feed the monsters while you earn achievements, staying out of danger, and collecting diamonds.

Comimix

Love comics? Perfect, this app will be your savior during your study break. Comimix pulls in a variety of popular comic titles and allows you to read them all on your iPhone. With Comimix you can save some of the strips to your iPhone, send them to FaceBook so your study buddies can be distracted as well, and find other comics to browse.

When you are done with your study break remember to get right back to work and use a flash card app like Cram to get help you ace your test.

I wanted to give you eight items that you probably are considering buying, but shouldn’t! By avoiding some of these items, you should be able to save a few hundred bucks.

#1 New textbooks: I highly recommend that you purchase your textbooks used. NEVER purchase your items in the bookstore. Instead, use sites online such as Amazon, Half and more.

#2 A car: If you’re going to live on campus, don’t purchase a car. You will find that you can take the bus, ride your bike, or even hitch a ride with your friends. Now, if you’re going to live at home during college, then you will need a car.

#3 New clothing: Sure, you may want to make a fashion statement, but is it necessary to purchase $80 jeans? Save that money, and apply it toward your tuition. You can buy all the nice things when you get a good job in the future.

#4 High-end phone: I saw so many college kids walking around with an iPhone, and more. While it’s great to have a phone like this, consider getting an iPod Touch instead, and connect via WiFi if you really want the apps like the flash card iPod touch app Cram. This way, your cell phone bill won’t be $100+ a month.

#5 Software in store: Don’t go to your local Best Buy, and purchase software at full price. Instead, highly consider looking for freeware versions, or consider getting the student versions in your local bookstore.

#6 High end laptop: You may want to consider just bringing a lower end laptop to your school. This way, if it was to get stolen, you wouldn’t have to worry as much. In college, any laptop will do, especially if you’re using it for word processing, and more.

#7 A printer: There’s really no need for a printer in college. You will find that as long as you’re a student at the college, you should be able to print for free in your library.

#8 Your meal plan: Carefully look at your meal plan, and crunch the numbers. You may find that 9 times out of 10, it’s going to be cheaper to go to the grocery store, and purchase your food, rather than get junk at the cafe.

When it comes down to college, look at your expenses and really ask yourself if you need the item, or not. When you do this, you’re going to find that you can not only save a lot of money, but avoid purchasing items that won’t be used that often in school.

Let’s be honest, it’s not always mandatory for the person you are calling to know exactly who is dialing them on the other line. Sometimes the element of surprise is required, especially when surprising a friend on their birthday, making a prank phone call (yes, people still prank call), or even trying to reach a person that is obviously avoiding your phone calls.

This is when your iPhone expertise must kick in and using one of the three techniques below will help you achieve the goal.

For the times you simply want to hide your iPhone phone number in order to make a phone call or two without the receiver knowing who’s on the other end, use the “*67″ method. To use the *67 method to hide your iPhone phone number:

1. Tap on the iPhone “Phone” icon from the home screen.
2. Enter *67.
3. Immediately following *67, enter the number you wish to dial, using the area code first.
4. Tap on “Call”.

Now your phone call will be made without displaying your phone number for this phone call only.

Hide your iPhone Number with all Calls

To block your iPhone phone number from being displayed when placing phone calls from this point forward (unless your reverse the changes):

With the Help of your Phone Service Provider

1. Contact your iPhone phone carrier.
2. Ask about the cost to block your phone number when calling phone numbers. At your request, your iPhone phone number will be blocked.

Using Your Built-In iPhone Settings

1. Tap on the “Settings” icon.
2. Scroll down and tap on “Phone.”
3. Tap on “Show my Caller ID”.
4. Tap on the button to turn the button to the “Off” position.

Question: Where are my archived iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch emails located after I choose to ‘Archive’ them from my email?

Answer:

This is a great question that we are actually asked here at SimpleLeap pretty frequently. To get to it, it’s so simple and you are going to be sick after you realize it was in your face the entire time (at least that’s how I felt, lol). Anyhow…to retrieve all of those emails you don’t want on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch anymore:

1. Open “Mail” on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.
2. Scroll down to find “Mail Accounts“.
3. Tap on the account you wish to retrieve the archived email message.
4. Now scroll until you locate “All Mail“.
5. Tap on “All Mail“.
6. Allow your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad to load all of the emails.
7. Locate the email you are looking for. From here you can choose to actually ‘Delete’ a particular email by swiping the email message in the list from left to right OR you can simply move the email message into another folder by tapping the email message to open it and pressing the small folder icon in the bottom bar on the screen.

I warned it was super simple! So simple, it took me a few slow moments to discover, but I found it, it’s helpful, and I hope you guys can use this tip.
