4 Ways to Text for FREE on your iPhone & iPod

We all know the iPhone is wonderful, but the monthly bill to your service provider isn’t, especially if your favorite method of communication is texting. That’s ok though, there are numerous ways to send and receive your texts free on your iPhone, and I will let you in on them.

Just make sure you remember not to do this while driving or I will totally give you my mean “I hate that you are driving 5 mph because you want to text on your phone” stare..whew! Now on to the free texting

#1 – TextPlus

TextPlus is basically your new favorite app. It’s FREE unlimited texting on your iPhone, there is no simpler way of describing this app. It does have a little bonus, group texting. This feature works as if you are chatting with friends live, allowing all members of your chat group to view and reply to all texts sent, pretty cool! They feature:

  • Free, unlimited group texting
  • Anywhere in the world, app to app
  • Your friends don’t need to install a thing

#2 – TextNow

It’s almost nothing easier than using an app to do anything these days and free texting is not the exclusion. So open up your AppStore app and search for TextNow Lite. It’s free and you can send and receive 30 messages. Cool beans!

#3 – Instant Messenger using AIM

Ya, who knew but AIM on your iPhone is more useful than you thought (unless you already knew this, lol). Anywho, to use AIM as a free text portal, simply enter the phone number in the following format ( country code (in the US this is 1) +area code+phone number). Enter your message and there you have it. Message sent!

#4 -  Email

Note: You must know the provider of the person you are messaging with this method!

1.  Create a new email message.

2.  Type the phone number and the recipients provider address into the “TO” box in the following format. Below is the list of common providers:

Verizon: xxxxxxxxxx@vtext.com
AT&T: xxxxxxxxxx@txt.att.net
Sprint: xxxxxxxxxx@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile: xxxxxxxxxx@tmomail.net
Nextel: xxxxxxxxxx@messaging.nextel.com
Cingular: xxxxxxxxxx@cingularme.com
Virgin Mobile: xxxxxxxxxx@vmobl.com
Alltel: xxxxxxxxxx@message.alltel.com
CellularOne: xxxxxxxxxx@mobile.celloneusa.com
Omnipoint: xxxxxxxxxx@omnipointpcs.com
Qwest: xxxxxxxxxx@qwestmp.com

3. Type a message and click send.
4. The message will be sent to the cell phone with the number in the To: box

So there you are….now you have no excuse to pay your phone carrier a text message fee. Have fun and happy SAFE texting.

I just downloaded Textie. It is made by the same developers as Tweetie and Borange. It does not support SMS texting outside of the US, but I only need it to contact a few people who have iPhones without SMS on their plans. It’s a much cleaner interface than those listed above, and is easier to setup an account. There are ads which you can eliminate through in-app purchase.
